Notes: This didn’t go the way I originally intended, but I also don’t hate it? I hope you enjoy reading it and that it isn’t super weird. It is probably super weird. Thank you for my last minute beta. I appreciate you greatly!

Somehow I’m a historical archaeologist doing something I’m sure many have dreamed of doing. This space mission I am on. Man, what kind of reality are we even living in? I remember studying people like Aizawa, Senda and Binford, though I doubt I’ll ever have as many wives as Binford, given my mission is supposed to take two fucking years. What is this? The Martian? Either way, we’re only on day 105. Not even halfway to Mars. I signed up way too fast for this gig. I guess I’m supposed to be making history?

Sighing, I turn in my seat, feet floating out in front of me. It’s not my first space mission, they send you up to the International Space Station for a bit. Get you used to zero gravity. It is my first off world dig, though. You’d think, at this point, that they’d have some weird gravity technology. They don’t, this isn’t Star Trek.

Unhooking my harness, I float to the control bay. I’m the only archaeologist on the crew of six we have on board. Our captain, Okada Junichi, a history nerd that somehow became an astronaut after falling for all the previous astronauts sent up by JAXA, like Wakata Koichi, on top of wanting to see space himself. He keeps threatening to have me climb Olympus Mons with him. Who plans on climbing a space volcano? Who? It’s like a modern day horror.

Matsumoto Jun, a chemist interested in soil composition of Mars. He’s a little uptight, which is fine. We’ve known each other since university, after all, when we met in the library. Why we met, I still haven’t the least bit of an idea. He just sat beside me one day. We did meet another of our crew in university, though.

Aiba Masaki, a microbiologist specializing in extremophiles, which, if you ask me, he gets a little too excited when he is dealing with them. We were on the same train home most of the days after class, so at least us becoming friends makes some sense (he totally wore me down). When we went to training, the three of us ended up becoming better friends and friends with another guy.

Ikuta Toma, our current ship medical officer and botanist for the trip. Him and Matsumoto became fast friends. He’s a good guy.

Entering the control bay, I maneuver myself to sit down beside Ohno Satoshi, our mechanic and navigator. He’s sleepily staring at the video feed and radar. We could look outside, but monitors can be way more helpful.

“Oh-chan, what’s going on?” I ask.

Almost sleepily he turns to me, “Not much, Nino. I just sent my daily message to Sho-san.” Sakurai Sho, our mission director back on Earth. “He should be contacting us soon enough for the day.”

I nod in response, “I’d love to talk to Sho-san.”

“He’s a good guy.” Ohno said, smiling.

It takes about seven minutes for Sakurai to contact us over the comms, “Harmonia Six,” our ship, “come in Harmonia Six.”

“Tokyo, how is it landside?” I respond.

“About the same, Ninomiya-san. Though there was a weird sun flare today.”

“Sho-san, please. That isn’t landside,” I shake my head while Ohno grins.

“Nino, nothing has really happened,” Sakurai sounds amused over the comms.

“How boring,” I grumble as Ohno asks his question.

“Any navigation updates, Sho-san?”

“Nothing new to worry about. You’re still on track.”

“Excell-” Ohno began to say before he was cut off by his radars going off, “it seems we’re picking up something coming at us from the left...” He mumbles instead.

“Sorry, what was that?” Sakurai replies.

Glancing over at Ohno, I see him busy with his readings, “Oh-chan says something is being picked up on the left, you guys see anything about that before?”

“No,” Sakurai answers, “we haven’t picked up anything major in your vicinity over the past 24-hours.”

“Strange.” I reply as Ohno huffs to himself, “Are you absolutely sure?”

“One hundred percent, and we aren’t picking up anything right now.”

Ohno looks up and stares at me, “It’s heading strai-” and before he could finish, we hear a loud thunk and a tremor that runs through the ship.

“We’ve been hit!” I exclaim.

“It shoved us off course, even.” Ohno says in an even tone, almost of fascination.

In the background, we hear Sakurai yelling at the land crew, trying to figure out what is going on. Before too long, he comes back on the radio, “You say you’ve been hit. Has there been a breach in the ship’s hull?”

“No...” Ohno says while flipping through the ships readings, “There is nothing according to monitoring system.”

“Good, keep that moni-” Sakurai manages says before the comms go to flat out white noise, right as Okada enters the control bay.

“What’s going on?” Okada asks, pulling himself over to his seat.

“We’ve been hit by something and are trying to course correct now.” I reply, glancing between him and Ohno. When I do look at Ohno, I see him stunned and staring at the monitor displaying an outside visual of our trajectory. I see a glowing purple circle before everything goes red.

Then dark.

---

When I awaken, I find myself floating in the control bay, my seat belt seemingly unbuckled. The room glows red. Woozily, I glance around. Empty. I find it empty, my fellow astronauts gone from the room.

Bang!

A sound behind me calls out, not from this room, though. Turning, so that my front runs parallel to the floor of the ship, I push off and out of the room.

Travelling from room to room, I see no one. Not one of fellow astronauts on the ship. I go room to room, searching. Trying to feel them out as much as see them.

As I pass by one of our few windows to the outside, I hear a most upsetting noise.

Tap-tap-tap.

Almost as if it were coming from outside. It was the next room over I heard my name. My name, so far away it sounds. Almost as if they were down the hall but right next to me all the same. It’s almost disturbing enough to think that there is a ghost, but it is the voice of Jun-kun, I think.

I do not see him.

Instead, I look out the window. We aren’t in Kansas anymore. We aren’t even in our solar system if the giant gas planet looming before the ship, gases a mix of purples and oranges in no pattern I’ve ever seen before, back dropped by an inky black sky.

A breeze runs through my hair.

I look around, spotting nothing. “Who’s there?” I ask, “You can come out and fight me! Or, better yet, find Okada-san and fight him, my back hurts too much for this shit. I’m going to lie down.”

I imagine it’s just a bad dream. I must still be unconscious in the control bay. That’s the only explanation of what is going on. Nothing else makes any sense. I think as much to myself as I pull myself to my bunk to sleep. And sleep I do, as well as see.

---

I see a glimmering sight of the rest of the crew, lost in the ship. They feel so alone. They are alone. Why I see it, I haven’t any idea. That’s when I see the hole, the hole in the ship Ohno is attempting to fix.

Seeing myself in my bunk, I awaken to hot air passing on my face. I don’t like it much, turning my head to the side. It smells bad. The light in the ship is still red. I see Ohno beside in the room with me. “Oh-chan, what are you doing here?”

“I came to find you,” he says with a shrug.

“Did you just leave me in the control room, floating? What the fuck?” I say with a small mocking grin.

“I did. I had to fix the ship.” Ohno floated over, unbuckling me.

I push out of the bunk and right myself with the handholds. “Where is everyone else?”

“I don’t know, I was hoping you would.”

I stare at him blankly for a moment, “I clearly don’t. I thought I was going crazy, so I came to lie down?”

At that moment, we heard footsteps run past the room and a blood curdling scream. We look at each other before I push Ohno to go ahead of me so we can look and see what is going on.

Floating forward, we turn right out of the room towards where the sound came from, the food storage area. The food storage area, where what appears to be bloody footprints lead us into the room. Footprints...

“What the actual fuck?” I say, staring down at the prints as I float into the room. Ohno just shakes his head in response. The prints lead straight to the cupboard, ending there. We hear footsteps leading away as we reach the cupboard. Slowly we open the cupboard and find a bone, which is a very strange item to find aboard a spacecraft. I examine it, uncomfortable with what I find.

“Oh-chan... Why is there a humerus?” I ask, glancing at him with big eyes, “It almost looks human aside from the deltoid tuberosity.”

“Ohhhh...” Ohno says in response, clearly lost.

“Ah, this just isn’t good.” I say, nodding. Ohno merely nods in response.

---

Around a half hour later, we finally run into someone else, Ikuta. He’s sporting a black eye and a butterfly bandaged-up gash up his left arm.

“Ohno-san! Nino! Hello!” he exclaims, eyes big like he’s seen something.

“Toma-kun, what happened to you?” I ask.

Ikuta sighs and looks around, “It was Jun-kun. After the crash and the lights went red, he just went nuts, punched me,” he gestures to his eye, “pushed me,” his arm, “and then disappeared.”

“Did you see where he went?” Nino asks.

“No, I don’t. He literally disappeared.”

“Like, poof?” Ohno asks.

“Yep. Vanished into thin air. Haven’t seen him since.” Ikuta exclaims with wide eyes.

“What the fuck is even going on?” I ask the universe, putting my face in my hands. In my minds ear, I hear the sound when someone joins your party in Dragon Quest.

---

It isn’t long until we find Aiba and Okada, both of which were shoved into random cabinets, both of which hug us upon release, though Okada shows his thanks in a little more intense method, touching butts. They’d both been unconscious most of the time.

Travelling down the corridors, we approach the window from before. I glance out. It’s different somehow. The gas giant is no longer purples and oranges, but instead a ring of green with a black centre. An eyeball.

Bang, bang!

The ship spins. The red goes out, it is dark.

The lights come back on, Matsumoto is standing on the roof of the ship, smiling. He blinks, one eye at a time, darting around, looking at each person.

The lights flicker.

He’s gone.

The rest of the crew is gone, one for each successive light flicker until I am alone once again. Looking outside again, the eye is gone. The inky darkness is gone, instead a milky white, almost as if I’m running to the headlight of a car on a highway.

---

Groaning, I open my eyes. It’s white, smelling of antiseptic. Ikuta smiles down at me, “You took quite a hit, Nino. We’re on Mars.” One eye blinks. When he backs away, I see a live feed of the planet we are approaching. It is blue.

I am back!

First of all, I am sorry to keep you waiting. I had been on a family vacation, then house moving for most of the past weeks. I am really sorry you have to wait this long m_m

Now, let’s get on with the story.

Wowww, whaooo!!! What is an amazing story! Seriously, I love the weirdness and the awesome imagination in this. I always have a soft spot for creative writing, or story with unusual plot. This is certainly falls into that category. Given Scifi setting, I guess anything is possible. As I read it, I kept thinking, wondering, which strange universe we were dealing with. The premise was awesome. I always love Arashi as an exploration crew(fun!) You also add Okada and Toma here, which I extremely appreciate (Okada and his butt-touching! LoL) Ohno as a pilot was just sooo right and he had such a cool character. And I loved that Jun was the weird one (at least in “the dream”). When Toma mentioned Jun got weird, I laughed so hard - like of course! I really enjoy this. What a fun and exciting story.

By the way, I am not sure if you intended this, but I got a lot of Dr. Who vibe from this story. LoL Okay, maybe it’s because I am a big fan of the show and the unusual plot and stuffs in Nino’s dream(?) are definitely in the same league as Dr.Who universe. Especially when it looked like Nino had been dreaming, it made me thought of the Dream Lord - my favorite character- somehow. If you are not a Dr.Who fan, you must have thought me crazy at this point. LoL

Anyhow, was Nino really dreaming? Or was he STILL in a dream? *grinning*

Wooooooooah.

I started this story like "Oh a cute little thing about going to Mars" and then things ramped up and I was suddenly WTF!! But in a good way honestly LOL You got my attention and then I was completely on board. I actually like how weird this story is because SPACE IS WEIRD. We don't know enough about the universe. Time, logic, it could easily be thrown out the window out there. Everything being so normal, even Sho being all "eh nothing's happening" and then CHAOS was fascinating to me. I applaud you trying out something unique, anon!

And that ending! Good luck Nino D: LOL

I thought this story was interesting. It was very confusing and I was like: What the hell happened to them?! But it seems that it was all a dream of Nino? The part between the colliding and the ending? Poor boy had such a nightmare. I really hope that everything was okay in the end
