Summary: “Am I doomed for life?”
Author’s Notes: Hello! I dunno if this is the kind of story you’ll like, but I seriously hope you’ll like it. I was so stuck up with Nino being a florist and giving flowers to Jun, but I dunno how I’ll tell that story. I had one, but I ended up changing it entirely. I really wanted to take this to a higher rating because smut is life. (Hahahaha) Sadly, I couldn’t. Maybe next time. This story might not make sense at first, but I hope it will be by the end of it. Thank you to Nino-mod for being so considerate and everything. I so love you! To my beta! You’re the best! And to you recipient-san, I really really hope you’ll like this.
Nino wasn’t fond of his gift.
Growing flowers was just too boring. And honestly, it was too girly. Sometimes, he wished that he had another gift.
Perhaps the gift of fire?
With that, he would probably be enjoying exploding anything, or even anyone by now. (Don’t worry; he isn’t THAT VIOLENT - unless it was the bosses in the game he was playing, of course.) The gift of air wasn’t bad either. After all, flying could always be considered fun. And then, there was also the gift of water, and that was slightly a better choice. At least, maybe with that, he could like the sea better.
The gift of earth wasn’t that bad actually. You can build things with rocks; maybe even make armors or fortresses. With that, Nino could bring his games to life.
There were a lot of possibilities that could have been given to him at birth. But, seriously, the gift of growing flowers? You’ve got to be kidding him.
“Am I doomed for life?” 7-year-old Nino would exaggerate at times, when he was complaining about it to his best friend, Aiba.
“Come on, Ninomi. It’s not that bad.” Aiba would comfort Nino, and Nino would return it with a snort.
“Easy for you to say because you can fly.” Nino would grumble. As if on cue, Aiba would utter that hyena-like laugh before taking off because, apparently, that was the time to show-off.
“Stupid Aiba-shi~” Nino pouted, as he watched his friend glide in the sky like there was no tomorrow.
Nino won’t ever admit it, but he did envy his friend. Because of that, Nino pledged on that day.
“When I grow up, I’ll find someone who can fly higher than Aiba-chan. He would be my one and only.”
---
The thought was back then when Nino was just a little boy and raging hormones was talking for him (Wait, that early? That couldn’t be right). Nino grew up to be simple guy who runs a flower shop. As people grow up, everything changes, and that included Nino and his beliefs. He fell in love with people who weren’t able to fly. (Aiba was off the list from the start. Nino couldn’t imagine being together with Aiba. Well, maybe when they’re goofing off, but that was another story).
Ohno Satoshi was his first, a man with the gift of water. He had the ability to bend water and make them dance in the air. It suited someone like him, because the man was both artistic and flexible. He was a painter and an occasional dancer after all. Like the water, he had a calm demeanor to top it all.
Ohno was like the sea. Despite the calmness, his presence was strong and constant in Nino’s life. They clicked almost instantly, and were very compatible. They were also both very passive. It was like this comfortable silence was their constant companion. They had their own businesses to attend to; and when it meant business, it meant fishing for Ohno and games for Nino, respectively. Don’t get them wrong – those were serious stuff for them.
Sadly (or inevitably) , that was it. There were no sparks or anything. It was like they were just two people who happened to click in ways no one could understand. In the end, they decided to just remain friends. Cliché, but all was cool.
Sakurai Sho was Ohno’s exact opposite. He was passionate at what he was doing. Maybe it had to do with the fact that he had the gift of fire. Able to produce fire with just a click of his fingers, Sho had the power to illuminate darkness. No wonder he was enlightened of what he should be and what he could be.Work was top priority, and he would always take the extra mile to bring success (And he was doing a damn great job!).
Despite all of it, Sho still managed to make sure he had time for Nino. He would make sure that Nino wasn’t taken for granted. He would make an effort just to assure Nino of his love. For Sho, every minute counted, and as much as Nino loved the idea, being too passionate was too much for him. He couldn’t keep up with Sho’s pace, his views of their futures together, and his fast-forwarded time.
Nino decided that maybe he wasn’t the one Sho should spend that bright future with. Like Ohno, Sho became one of his closest friends instead.
Nino went back to his world of flower-growing in his small flower shop along the quieter part of Tokyo. And, frankly, that was all there is to it. It wasn’t like he was still not fond of his gift. Over the years, he learned to actually appreciate it. Nino wasn’t sentimental, but he loved seeing his customers happy with the flowers he grew, making their days special even in such a simple way.
Sadly, it wasn’t enough to make himself feel special.
“Maybe, I wasn’t special to begin with.” Nino told Aiba one night when they were gathered on the balcony of his small apartment. He was leaning on the railing, overseeing the night lights of Tokyo. There was a can of beer on one of his hand, another held a lit cigarette.
“Nino, everyone is special in their own way. You just have to find your own way.” Aiba said softly before sipping from his can of beer. Nino snorted.
“Easy for you to say because you can fly.” Nino replied, just like before. This time, Aiba just shrugged and didn’t comment. He didn’t fly off like he used to. He just patted Nino’s back.
Nino sighed, giving up on finding that way, or whatever it was that Aiba meant.
“It’s no use.” Nino thought. There was just nothing special about him. That was the bottom line.
---
“For you.”
Nino wouldn’t normally do this, giving someone a flower out of nowhere. He did give some to little girls or old ladies who passed by the shop admiring the flowers but didn’t have enough money to afford a bouquet. Still, this was different because it wasn’t every day you would give a flower to a guy who just happened to pass by. By the looks of it, the man seemed to be rushing towards his work.
“Huh?” The man paused, startled.
“For you.” Nino repeated, grinning like it was the normal thing to do. He raised his hand to meet the man’s eye level.
The guy raised an eyebrow, eyeing the flower given to him.
“Uhm, thank you?” He said, looking at Nino. He was hesitant at first, but he accepted the flower offered. Nino shrugged, and went back to the shop, not commenting on the bizarre deed he did that day.
Nino thought it would just be a one-time event. But, somehow, it became a daily occurrence. In the morning, Nino would arrangethe flowers displayed outside, and, like clockwork, the man would pass by. At first, it was just for the sake of greeting when Nino offered the man another flower. But, as days passed, their greetings turned into lovely chats and breakfast together before going to each one’s respective work. It wasn’t just in the morning anymore either, or once a day, but something that could happen whenever they want.
From them on, it wasn’t just ‘the man’ anymore for Nino. He was Matsumoto Jun, and Nino wanted to know more about him.
Still, Nino never failed to bring that same flower he gave the first time they met and Jun always accepted them with full gratitude. By then, Jun was different than before. He was bubblier and more relaxed. It was like something had changed; something good. Nino hoped the reason behind it was him.
Nino never asked what Jun’s gift was. It wasn’t that it was not important, really, it would be lovely to know at this point. After all, people would share something as important as that to their loved ones. But Nino reminded himself every time he yearned to know, “You aren’t special. So, you’re definitely not someone special to him.”
Nino won’t admit it, but that thought hurt him in ways he couldn’t explain.
“I never got to ask you why you gave me that flower that day.” Jun suddenly said as they were eating breakfast. Jun had brought sandwiches in the shop, and, although it was already time to open the shop for the day, Nino didn’t.
Nino hadn’t thought about the reason actually. It was just something that came to his mind. Was it the way Jun was slouching down while walking? Was it the way Jun looked so troubled while looking down? Or was it Jun’s whole aura that screamed, ‘Help me’?
Nino remembered that day like it was just yesterday. He was sprinkling water to the flowers outside the shop when he chanced a glance to his side. Jun was walking towards his direction, looking distressed while hurrying somewhere. What caught Nino’s attention was a faint glow on Jun’s back, attractive but restrained. Nino thought that maybe a flower could help ease up the tension. He looked at the bunch of flowers in front of him and grabbed the white one.
“This meant, ‘It’s heavenly to be with you’,” Nino said to himself, thinking that it just felt right to give that flower.
“I thought I saw an angel trapped in this world. That’s why I gave you that flower. You know, to cheer you up and the likes.” Nino said nonchalantly before munching on his sandwich. He didn’t see immediately how his words affected Jun until he looked up, seeing Jun’s eyes and mouth wide open in shock.
“What?” Nino asked, surprised at Jun’s reaction.
“You could see my wings?” Jun exclaimed, making Nino to raise his eyebrow.
“Wait… you really have wings?” Nino asked back, not believing it.
When he first met Jun, it was a just faint glow, but as days passed and he got to spend more time with Jun, that faint glow started taking shape of a pair of wings. It was all white accented with a purplish hue. It was so beautiful, and Nino thought that it fitted Jun just the same.
“And I thought I was seeing things.” Nino said, smiling unbelievably.
“No, you were seeing me. You saved me.” Jun said, suddenly moving closer towards Nino. He stopped in front of Nino, then took his hand.
“I was losing it, you know.” Jun started, glancing at his back to point out his wings. Nino looked at it before looking back at Jun’s eyes.
“Life in your world was slowly consuming me. I was starting to forget what I’m supposed to be, until you found me.” Jun said, smiling at Nino.
“But I didn’t do anything special. I’m not special.” Nino said, still not believing how things turned out to be like this.
“You stopped me from withering, Kazu. You helped me bloom again…” Jun said. “Just like these flowers around us.” Jun added while looking around the shop. Nino looked around, contemplating.
Maybe having the gift of growing flowers wasn’t that bad. Still, Nino thought he wasn’t special.
“No… I don’t think…”
“Just shut up and kiss me.”
Nino did as told by the angel.
----
“You know, Nino, even if I can fly, I can’t fly as high as angels can.”
“Angels?”
“They are beautiful creatures living above us. Some of them go down and live with us. My mother said that if you were able to see their wings, then you are special.”

And then there’s Jun with wings! I love their first meeting and Nino’s lack of reason to give him flower, and how then they become fast friends and share daily routine. And Jun’s an angel! I was wondering where he'd fit the circle of gifts. It is so cute that Nino finally finds someone who can fly higher than Aiba. Thank you so much for this sweet story in this dreamlike universe, anon <3!
