Title: A Day In The Life
Pairing/Focus: Ohmiya
Rating: G
Word count: 2247
Warnings: Nothing to note.
Summary: Police Chief Nino needs some rest, but there is not a chance that is going to happen with all the break-ins, or might there be a way? Either way, he’s tired.
Notes: Dearest recipient, I hope this fic finds you well in these trying times. I hope you enjoy it and I also hope you just have a very good day in general. Also, thank you to my beta who could help in the ridiculous timeline of my life and to the mod for endlessly being patient with me.
Nino was tired. He had thought becoming police chief would lead to much more time to relax. The idea of not having to be as “on” had been appealing to him. How wrong he’d been. The paperwork was never ending and any small problem came through and he had to deal with it. On top of that, there had been a rash of break-ins recently that were endlessly frustrating him. He’d made five press conferences already. So far none of the break-ins had led to injury but who was to say it would stay like that. Criminals often escalated their level of crime. It was only a matter of time. So to say he enjoyed his job would definitely be wrong. Nino had never hated it more and he wished he could have a little peace and quiet.
One top of that, it was also only a matter of time before the peace of his office was interrupted. He wouldn't call the police force needy. It was more his old partner still loved to come and see what he was up to. It also wasn't helped by the fact he had assigned his old partner the case of the break ins and that it was likely hin currently rapping at his door.
Pinching his nose, Nino sighed and said, "Come in."
The door swung open to reveal his old partner, Aiba, and his current partner, Jun. "Nino-san, there has been another robbery."
Aiba and Jun sat down across from Nino in his chairs.
Nino stared at them for a moment before running a hand down his face, "I take it you are on your way?"
"We were wondering if you wanted to come with us?" Jun asked with Aiba nodding along.
"I'm the chief, why would I want to come?" Nino asked.
"Come on, it'll be like old times!" Aiba said.
Nino sighed as he leaned back and looked between the two of them. He had been stuck in the office a long while.
"Fine, fine. You've twisted my arm. Let's go."
-------
When they arrived on the scene it was rather quiet. Another break-in that had not resulted in injury or harm it seemed. As they had driven over, Aiba had filled Nino in with all the details. Some silver items from the display cases and a few paintings had been taken from the site. All relatively easy to sell if you knew what you were doing. Aside from the owner taking note of what was missing, the scene had been left untouched.
Stepping out of the car, Nino looked at Aiba. Despite being the chief, it was still Aiba’s case. He was, if anything, an observer.
“We’ll go see what they’ve found for evidence so far. The officers on the scene already took a statement from the business owner. We’ll talk to them again later.” Aiba said. Nino knew he was speaking to Jun and he felt almost a swell of pride. When they had been partners, Nino had very much been the responsible one. It was, admittedly, weird to see Aiba being the responsible partner. That’s probably why the swell of pride was so small.
Nino followed Aiba and Jun into the scene, standing back to let the two of them work. He’d been at a few of the scenes before and as per usual it was pretty devoid of any evidence of a break-in. Somehow there were never broken locks or smashed windows, almost as if the thief was magic. Even stranger still, none of the items ever showed up on the black market as far as they could tell. They simply seemed to stop existing.
“Hey, Aiba-san!” Nino heard Jun say as he waved down the detective, “I think I found something.”
Aiba perked up from where he was looking and bounced over. Very little evidence had been left previously. “What did you find, Jun-kun?”
“It looks to be paint? Red paint. Just some flakes of it but I don’t think it should be here.”
"Interesting." Aiba said as he clapped Jun on the back, "Has there been paint at any other scenes you can think of?"
"This is the seventh scene?" Jun asked.
"It is!" Aiba nodded.
"I'll have to check the evi-" Jun began before he was interrupted by Nino.
"There was paint at three of the other scenes. Purple, yellow, green, and now red." Nino stopped as the two detectives turned to look at him. "What?" he shrugged, "I had to make a lot of press conferences."
"I see why he got promoted." Jun said., to which Aiba gave him a hurt look.
Nino merely shook his head as he left the building to get some fresh air. He figured the paint was probably accidental. There was never really enough to tell anything outside colour and type.of paint. Acrylic paint.
Once he was outside and his eyes had adjusted to the sun, Nino scanned the crowd. Sometimes the perp would return to the scene of the crime. Who Nino did not expect to see was his own life partner, Ohno.
Nino smiled to himself, Ohno had clearly been shopping. He was holding a bag to his favourite art supply store that was nearby. Thinking nothing of it, Nino went to go see his partner. As he got closer he began to speak.
"Oh-chan!" Nino said, "How is your day going?"
Ohno slowly looked over and smiled softly at Nino, "Oh! Nino, hi! It's going okay. I just picked up some paints. I ran out of blue. How are you?"
“I’m good, tired but good.” Nino said as he stepped behind the line to stand next to Ohno.
“What brings you out to a scene?” Ohno asked.
Nino sighed and leaned on Ohno, “Oh, just Aiba dragging me out to the scene of a crime. He figured it would be good for me to show up.”
Ohno turned to look at Nino the best he could, “Another robbery?”
Nino nodded into Ohno’s shoulder as he stared at the entrance to the robbed building. The next thing he knew, Aiba and Jun were making their way out of the building looking around. Probably for him he figured.
Nino stopped leaning on Ohno and stood up straight as he noticed as Aiba spotted him. The two were coming towards them.
“Ninomiya-san! Ah, Ohno-san, how are you?” Aiba said as he approached.
“Aiba-san, I’m good. How are you?” Ohno replied.
“Good, good. Oh, yes, this is Matsumoto-kun, my new partner.”
Jun greeted Ohno while giving him a once-over, Nino noticed. The new guy was an inquisitive fellow, Nino noted, though he did narrow his eyes a little.
“Oh-chan is my partner,” Nino said to Jun.
“Your… OH!” Jun exclaimed, “Nice to meet you.”
Ohno smiled softly at Jun, “Nice to meet you as well. I hope Aiba-san is treating you well.”
“He’s a great partner,” Jun said, “and Ninomiya-san is a great chief.”
Ohno gave Jun a small chuckle at that, “That’s good to know, Matsumoto-san.”
Nino only shook his head at them. Taking a breath Nino readied himself to return to work, “So, what have you guys found out?”
“We finished questioning the owner again so we’re ready to head back to the precinct. Are you good to go?” Aiba asked.
“Yeah, let’s go.” Nino said with a nod before he turned to look at Ohno, “I’ll see you tonight.”
Ohno nodded and smiled at Nino, “Have fun at work!”
Nino laughed, “I’ll try.”
-------
Back at the station they added the newest robbery to the map. All of the robberies, it seemed, were within a 40 kilometre radius and yet there seemed to not be much of a pattern as far as they could tell. The three of them stared at the map.
“So, where was the paint all found?” Jun asked.
Nino moved forward and placed small x’s at all the spots. That cluster was a little tighter. “Including today, these are the areas the paint was found.”
Aiba and Jun nodded.
“Those four have the art store Ohno-san went to near the centre.” Jun said.
Nino looked from Jun to the map, “You’re right. I wonder if Sho-san knows anything…”
“Sho-san?” Jun asked.
“He owns the art store,” Nino replied, “He is good friends with Oh-chan, even though he can’t draw one bit. It’s a mystery he even owns an art shop.”
“Ahh, should we talk to him?” Jun asked.
“It wouldn’t hurt to try,” Aiba said with a shrug.
Nino nodded.
“Also, before we head out. I don’t know how to mention it, but Ohno-san had paint on his shoes. Red paint, as well as green. I might have seen yellow as well? I’m not sure.”
Nino flipped around to look at him, “He’s an artist. He’s going to have paint on his shoes.” He narrowed his eyes.
“I’m not saying it’s him, but why was he at the scene? He didn’t know you’d be there.”
“Jun-ku-” Aiba began before being cut off by Nino.
“He was getting some supplies and was on his way home.” Nino said sternly.
Before Jun could say anything more, Aiba placed a hand on his shoulder. “We’ll go talk to Sakurai-san. Maybe he can tell us something about the paint we found.”
“You do that.” Nino said, turning to head to his office. “Let me know if anything comes up.”
“Will do.” Aiba said.
---------
A few hours later Aiba arrived at Nino’s office. He knocked and entered, Jun wasn’t with him.
“So,” Nino said as he looked up at Aiba, “did you find out anything?”
“We managed to find the paint brand, Sakurai-san had it in stock. He also gave us a list of the recent purchasers of it. Only three people. Ohno-kun, a teacher, and an university art student.” Aiba said, his face looked grim.
“Couldn’t have been any other brand?” Nino asked.
“Nope. He doesn’t think so.”
Nino nodded, “Well, it probably isn’t Oh-chan.”
“Nino…” Aiba said, he looked sad, “I don’t think it is him but it could be.”
“The perp could have also bought it at a different shop.”
“You’re right, they could have. We’ll ask around, okay?”
“Okay.” Nino nodded with little relief. He wasn’t sure what was going on but there was no way it could be Ohno. Not his Ohno.
-------
When Nino got home he was still extremely concerned. There was almost no relief and he couldn’t get the possibility out of the back of his mind. He had returned to some fish cooked by Ohno, something he’d caught the previous day, and while delicious, Nino had not been much for conversation that night.
The real issues Nino had came to a head when he was trying to sleep. He could not sleep. What was said about the paint continued to roll through his mind. He just could not get it out of his brain. What if it was Ohno doing all those robberies? Nino would have to arrest him. Nino didn’t want to arrest him because how would it look if he had to arrest his own partner? Not to mention he loves him, but to arrest your own partner in life? Damn.
Fortunately for Nino, he worried himself to sleep. Not a restful sleep, but sleep nonetheless. At least he was asleep until he felt movement beside him. He vaguely registered it as Ohno getting out of bed. That was okay, he was allowed. What Nino didn’t expect next was the click of the front door.
Nino sprang out of bed and quickly changed his pants. He was far too deep in his suspicions to let it go. Throwing on a jacket he began to follow Ohno.
Nino followed him all the way to the art store Ohno had been at earlier. He didn’t expect Sho to let Ohno in as he did. Nino peeked around the corner, waiting for Ohno to come back out. He couldn’t believe it. Whether he was a thief or not, he also could be cheating on Nino. At least, that’s a thought that crossed Nino’s mind for all of a minute. If he were cheating, Ohno was clearly doing a poor job of it. But now, Ohno was wearing gloves.
Ohno was also sneaking down the street. Nino continued to tail him up to a small corner museum. Not all the robberies were at museums, but it wasn’t all that uncommon. As Ohno began working on the door, Nino heard him talk.
“You know, you could just join me?” Ohno said.
Nino was startled. Did he know Nino was following him?
The next thing that came from Ohno was a big sigh. Ohno turned around and looked directly at Nino, “Nino, seriously. I know you hate your promotion.”
Nino left the shadows and looked at Ohno, “Why do you do it?”
“To return what is lost.” Ohno said with a shrug, “Most of these places have stolen works. We’re returning them to their homes.”
Nino narrowed his eyes, “You and Sho-san?” Nino asked.
“Yeah. I steal the works and he gets them returned. It’s easy.”
“Ohno,” Nino started, “I should arrest you. Hell, I’m pretty sure Jun-kun is on to you.”
“We could leave.”
“Is it really that easy?” Nino asked.
“It is, Nino, it is.”
Nino struggled. He knew what he should do but he also knew what his heart wanted to do and quite frankly, his heart was winning.
Hell, his heart won.
“Be quick, Oh-chan.”
“I will.”
